Mammogram, ultra sound, stereotactic needle core, DCIS, lumpectomy, infiltrating cancer, comedo cells, positive margins . . . vocabulary of breast carcinoma graduates of 2008.
Most trust their lives to the medical profession. The results of tests and biopsies can be frightening and paralyzing. However, as a newbie to the Cancer Academy of 2008, I know now patients must take note of the pulse of the political climate before sacrificing oneself completely to an overworked medical system. Patients need be knowledgeable to make informed decisions for their health.
However, in doing so, the overwhelming vocabulary to process and digest is a university degree in and of itself. Once the new words are researched, the necessity to address the cancer seems to become an urgency for the patient and loved ones concerned for that persons life. THAT is when appointments seem delayed and time grinds to a halt.
"Hurry up and wait Lisa!" has been the resounding message given by incompetent receptionists and specialist alike. The Cancer Academy is not for the impatient or weak of heart. The stop and starts become ironically predictable and plans and schedules are reworked and flexed around appointments.
My strength to persevere comes from my incredible network. I have faith in God, a wonderful daughter, loving parents, superb family members, supportive friends, and an amazing, adoring partner. What more could a girl ask for?
Hurry up and wait!? . . . with support like this, it's really not so bad :)
